Wakefest back in Great Falls

GREAT FALLS – Wakefest will be the main attraction on the Missouri River along Lower River Road in Great Falls on Saturday, July 2, 2022.

“Wakefest is a wake boarding and wake surfing competition,” said Brittany Sykes, creative director of Launch Watersports, which organizes the event.

She explained, “We saw a big turnout last year and just thought it would be fun to continue the tradition. We have this river in our backyard, so might as well enjoy it!”

This year, part of the profits will be donated to Mount Eagle of the Great Falls.

“They’re a great organization and we’ve worked with them in the past as well,” Sykes said. “We actually store their boat for them and help them get these kids out.”

Participation in the contest costs $25. You must register in advance and bring your own equipment. As of Thursday, only a few places were still available.

Returning participant Rick Fossen is looking forward to getting back on the water in 2022 on his surfboard.

“I’ve been wakeboarding all my life and recently got into surfing. It’s just something that came naturally to me,” Fossen said.

He said surfing is something he’s really invested in over the past year: “Surfing is where you’re right behind the boat, basically riding the wave, back and forth, going in and out behind the wave, doing stuff and stuff like that.”

If the action of Wakefest seems like fun but you’re more comfortable on dry land, don’t worry.

“We’ll have a corn hole tournament on site, local food and drink vendors, face painting for the kids,” Sykes said.

There will also be an “after party” with music and a closing fireworks display.

The event starts at 3 p.m. and admission is $5 per person. Click here to visit the event website.
