Salem, Virginia. – Ride after ride, the Salem Fair is gearing up for another year.
“It’s a family reunion for us because we see the people with the food vendors, with Deggeler Attractions, with the entertainers who come back year after year,” City of Salem Tourism Director Carey Harveycutter said. .
A staple of Southwest Virginia, in its 34th year, the fair expects to draw thousands from across the state.
The event is Salem Civic Center’s biggest source of revenue, with money funneled back into the city’s resources.
“Deggeler Attractions helps the community, and this year it’s going to Salem Fire-EMS to help them with some needed equipment,” Harveycutter said.
While the fair is known for family fun, many minds are on the safety of the event after a shooting on the fair’s opening night last summer.
The Salem Fair ensures that it takes the necessary precautions to avoid any incident like the one that happened last year.
‘It’s a troubled world we live in today, but with metal detectors at the gates and police on site in a number of different areas and different methods, we hope it’s still a safe environment’ , said Harveycutter.
The fair will also have a designated entrance and exit. They will also not allow any unaccompanied minors without an adult aged 25 or over.
“There are no exceptions to this rule. We are not a babysitting space. We want people to be responsible. It’s a big family event and we want families to have a great time,” Harveycutter said.
The fair opens on Wednesday and will remain open until July 10.
