A private company is considering developing a solar farm on Foreside Road in Topsham.

The proposed project is an approximately 4.95 megawatt solar installation on a 34.6 acre site on the north side of Foreside Road.

The solar panels will cover approximately 423,034 square feet. The solar panel is expected to generate enough clean electricity to power approximately 1,425 homes.

“Distributed energy production – and, more importantly, distributed renewable energy production – strengthens the resilience of our electricity grid and reduces the production of greenhouse gas emissions. It’s good for the sustainability of the community, ”said Andrew Deci, Assistant City Planner.

Stantec Consulting Services, an engineering firm representing Long Road Development Company that proposed this project, will apply for a review of the site plan for the construction of the project, which will be considered at the planning board meeting of the next week.

The project is expected to start next year and will last nearly seven months.

Summit Ridge Energy of Arlington, Va. Is the owner-operator and long-term financier of the project.

“We acquired the project from Long Road Development Company,” said Brianna Steven, director of communications and business development for Summit Ridge Energy. “We have dedicated funding platforms through the creation of joint ventures with renowned investors who will fund development and operations for the full life cycle of the project, which is 25 to 35 years. “

Recreational trails crossing the property will remain open or be diverted, depending on the site plan request.

The project will also include a temporary gravel access road from Foreside Road to the north end of the solar panels.

“We take our commitment to environmental integrity seriously, which is why our team replants any foliage disturbed by construction,” said Steven. “At the end of the project life cycle, the company deconstructs the network and restores the land to its original state.
