Redding Police are investigating the discovery of human remains found at the site of a future Costco store.

The bones were discovered by Native American archaeological observers around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, December 3. Observers were on hand to search for tribal artifacts before construction began. Police said Monday the remains did not appear to be historic.

“To be on the safe side, police personnel cordoned off the area and restricted public access much like a crime scene,” said Sgt. Redding Police Jon Sheldon in a statement.

“It was obvious human skeletal remains,” Sheldon told Redding Record Searchlight.

Redding Police are now working with the Shasta County Coroner’s Office and the Chico State Department of Anthropology to collect and investigate the remains.

Aside from the Macabre Find, the Project – at Bechelli Lane and South Bonnyview Road – is would face other obstacles including a legal challenge involving the California Environmental Quality Act.

Police said the area was previously a camp where homeless people lived and added that at present it is not clear whether the incident is suspicious or whether it is a crime scene. The agents will stay on site all week.

Chuck Aukland, Director of Public Works at Redding told KRCR that construction of the project will continue.

There are no further details available on the deceased as of yet, according to police. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Detective Division of the Redding Police Department at (530) 225-4200.
